Multi network use (Linux)

Reviewed by: Bruce
This product is robust, and also can be used to add a second NIC in a Linux installation (and likely in windows also. Thus, even if the user already has a machine with a Gb. NIC, he/she may additionally be able to get some added benefit from this alone. Circumventing the fact this is not a powered unit (see weaknesses) There are 2 sub-options: 1) plug this item into the computer, then daisy-chain the powered hub. This will allow the removal of the powered hub if needed when rebooting to prevent the USB3 port from locking up until the machine is booted. Then reconnect. If the powered hub is connected downline daisy-chained, it may well back-power items connected to this item as well, however this power backup is what might cause a latching and non-boot if connected when booting. Simply remove the power from the powered hub until rebooted, but if latched, power cycle entirely, do not simply do a reboot. Then reconnect all after rebooting.
This unit is not independently powered. However Canada Computer does have a powered USB3 hub. Those 2 products might well be used in a daisy-chained configuration and likely work plug and play. See also above procedure to circumvent possible port latch up when rebooting. (This is common to many situations involving booting with powered USB items connected.)
As with all, the boons and the banes, but here, IMHO, the boons outweigh the banes.
